Ron Mildren

Former Wodonga Mayor and Councillor

I’m Ron Mildren - I proudly served as a Wodonga Councillor between 2016 and 2024, and as Wodonga’s Mayor between 2022 and 2024.

I’m a proud advocate for Wodonga and North East Victoria.

My achievements in 2 years as Wodonga’s Mayor:

Reduced Wodonga Council debt to its lowest level in over 10 years & have got the budget back on track.

Attracted new national & international businesses to Wodonga, creating nearly 400 jobs & over $23 million in land sales at Wodonga’s LOGIC. Funds that can be re-invested into our community.

Brought together the support of all Councils & communities across the North East behind a new, single-site hospital.

Now I’m working with the Federal Government to invest in a Defence & University medical school on the Border, to get us the Federal funding we need to build a new hospital, because I’m focused on solutions.

About Ron

I grew up in Wodonga, where I live with my wife and two children. I’m part of the Wodonga community and am proud to have been on the Wodonga Senior Secondary College Council, a past President of Wodonga Brass Band, and to have coached junior football.

I have a work background in construction, senior management in Local Government, and consultancy. I am a trade qualified carpenter and have a Bachelor of Town and Regional Planning from the University of Melbourne.

My experience is in economic development and land use planning, with specialised interest in business attraction.

Why I stood for Wodonga Council

To ensure Wodonga Council spends your ratepayer's money responsibly, providing infrastructure and services that actually meet community needs.

To maintain and improve existing community and sporting facilities.

To ensure Wodonga Council is accountable and transparent, with strong experienced leadership driving the city forward.

To be a real voice for Wodonga, not influenced by party politics or vested interests. I am a balanced voice for ratepayers and residents without fear or favour.

I am proud to stand up for the residents and ratepayers of Wodonga, to fight for what is fair and equitable.

My 2024 re-election priorities:

A new, single-site, fit for purpose hospital on the Border.

Responsible economic management that keeps rates & taxes low during this cost-of-living crisis.

Continuing to reduce Council debt so we can deliver the essential community services we all rely on.

My Focus:

I’ve proudly served as a Wodonga Councillor since 2016 & Wodonga’s Mayor since 2022.

In two years as Mayor, I’ve focused Wodonga Council on:

Getting serious about Wodonga’s advocacy for a new, single-site, fit for purpose hospital on the Border.

I’m solutions focused. I’ve brought together the support of all Councils & communities in the North East.

Now I’m working with the Federal Government to invest in a Defence & University medical school on the Border, to get us the Federal funding we need to build a new hospital.

Advocating for a new Border hospital

Keeping rates & taxes as low as possible, with a focus on responsible economic management, during this cost-of-living crisis.

Because I know & respect that Council’s money is our hard-earned money.

Financial responsibility

Reducing Wodonga Council debt to its lowest level in over 10 years, so we can afford to deliver the essential community services we all rely on.

Economic management

Actively attracting new national & international businesses to Wodonga, that invest in our community & create new long-term, skilled, & high paid jobs.

In the past two years, nearly 400 jobs have been created at LOGIC, and over $23 million collected from land sales.

This income can support the Council's delivery of community shaping infrastructure - setting us up for the future.

Local investment & new jobs

Ensuring we continue to unlock residential land across Wodonga to meet demand while increasing supply.

Supported by community infrastructure, sports fields, & transport for a healthy & connected community.

Housing affordability

What’s important to me:

Transparency & Consultation

  • Council decision making out of private briefings & into public Council meetings.

  • Instilling an organisational culture of responsibility, accountability, & transparency

  • Ensuring Council consults with our community, gathering a diversity of opinion, that is truly heard & genuinely considered.

Community Services

  • Maintaining & improving existing sporting, recreation, & community facilities.

  • Providing equity of access & better security of tenure for sporting clubs & community groups using Council managed assets.

  • Minimise red tape & create greater efficiency in Council administration.

  • Review Council policy & strategic plans to ensure they meet the needs of our growing city.
